Simple Plan had a great lineup to begin with, which this I think helped to increase the turnout for the concert. Due to the fact that those who were unsure about attending, would go to see the other bands or people would come to see the other acts instead and become Simple Plan fans.
The band also had a great setlist and came back for two encores. Many people in the audience were worried that they would mainly perform songs from their newest album, when they personally preferred material off their first or second album. My favourite Simple Plan album is their second, Still Not Getting Any... which I have been listening to for many years now. It was one of my favourites quite a few years ago. Simple Plan did in fact play many songs from all their albums, they played about seven off their newest, with the rest being an equal amount from their other three albums. The band also did a good job at interacting with the audience and infused quite a lot of humour into their show, including a medley of top 40 covers including Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5, Taio Cruz's Dynamite and Sexy and I Know It by LMFAO. They also made references to Black Eyed Peas and Sean Kingston songs, which I believed helped to keep them relevant, since their first album was released around ten years ago.
You could really tell that the band still enjoys what they do, even though they have matured in their skater-punk look - having long ago left behind the baggy cargo pants. They were running around stage, singing their hearts out and interacted with each other a lot as well. David Desrosiers, the bassist, during their first encore, told the crowd that he was going to come see them, then proceeded to take off his sound equipment and hat, and jump into the crowd to surf before quickly being grabbed by security.
Simple Plan played pretty much all of my favourite songs, including the single, Astronaut, off of their new album. Which before they began the song, the lead singer, Pierre Bouvier, asked that everyone in the audience get out their cellphones, glowsticks and lighters to wave in the air like stars while he was singing. It truly did look like he was alone in outer space, with only his bandmates! The only disappointment in their setlist was that they did not play Everytime off of their second album, which was a favourite of mine way back when. They did still play many other great songs from this album though.
I absolutely loved the concert, and thought that Simple Plan did a great job with their show. I would most definitely go see them again on their next return to Toronto, especially if their next album is as good as their last four have been!
Simple Plan perform Astronaut in Toronto!
