I was lucky to see and meet Fun. back in February when they were in Toronto at 102.1 The Edge's studio at Sugar Beach. I had thought that I wouldn't get the chance to catch their full length set when they returned on tour since the show was sold out, but due to popular demand the show was changed from The Mod Club to Kool Haus! I was not a big fan of the Kool Haus venue though it wasn't as bad as I thought it might have been. It was right across the road from Sugar Beach ironically enough. Kool Haus's sound system was satisfactory but being a nightclub it was incredibly bass heavy.
Fun's show was very polished and professional which you might not expect since many people have only just heard of them, when they have released their debut, Aim and Ignite in 2009. (Personally, I am still more of a fan of Aim and Ignite than of Some Nights.) The band, considering that this release was a while ago and they gained many fans from their sophomore album, played a great amount of material from their first album.
Fun had great energy live! It carried throughout the show but was not random and hyper. They really put on an awesome show. Fun is strongly considered the next great rock band, when I have never really understood this even though I love their music, since their songs are much more "pop-y" even though their first album is reminiscent of Queen. Live though Jack Antonoff, the guitar play, had many more solos and was really able to show off his skills, making the performance more of a rock show. All the members of Fun are very talented! Andrew Dost played both trumpet and piano - which one of the main things I enjoy about this band are their piano parts. Nate Ruess is incredibly talented as well and has an amazing live voice. Even though I have heard him sing live before I was still blown away by his skill.
Fun. were definitely a great show and I am happy I got the chance to see them perform a full set. They are definitely a concert to catch, and are a great band to be in the Top 40!
