The Black Keys - North American Tour 2012

The Shins, an acclaimed indie rock band, were the opening act for The Black Keys. Which lead me to think that this would guarantee a solid lineup. The Shins do have great music, and have been able to perfect their sound over the past decade. This is shown in their latest creation, Port Of Morrow; which is a great album. I would have thought that after having so many years of experience, that their live show would be fantastic as well. Sadly though The Shins do not live up their hype. Their music is great but they were boring on stage. None of them moved around at all, or talked except to say a very brief thank you at one point. This made for a bit of a disappointed, even though the band does sound great live. I do not plan on seeing them live again though.
The Black Keys have been another band that have been on the circuit for a while, with a great amount of hype surrounding them. Surely they would be able to put on a memorable show. The band does have the live sound and talent, as well as the complex lighting to do this, but otherwise they also were boring. Dan Auerbach moving around on stage, while Patrick Carney pounding away at the drums took them to the level above the zombie style show of The Shins, but they still did not show any level of genuineness. To begin with, they didn't interact with the audience. At one point they mentioned how much they "love this town", not even bothering to say Toronto. Glen Campbell was still able to do that when I saw him last summer, and it's much more understandable for him to forget where he is. The Black Keys have also become a stadium band, meaning their fan base has changed, with most of the audience not being into the show at all. The Black Keys were an empty show, and left me not even wanting to listen to their music afterwards.
After waiting to see the band for months, they left me extremely disappointed.
