Grouplove with Young The Giant

Who would have thought of Grouplove's beachy, carefree vibe music being relevant during the end of winter in New York City?
Grouplove, a band with a unique story behind their formation as well as its members being from around the globe, are definitely a must on your music to watch list. Their music is light and catchy with a slightly edgier undertone on some songs. Their first full-length album helps enforce this feeling with the title, Never Trust A Happy Song
I was excited to find out that Grouplove was opening for Young the Giant on their upcoming tour. Even though they were not on the bill for the Toronto show, I was luckily going to be visiting a friend in New York at the same time as their stop in that city. I sadly didn't see Walk The Moon in Toronto (who were opening for Young The Giant here instead) but I do have a slight preference for the opening act that I saw in NYC.
Grouplove's set was superb. They opened with Lovely Cup, a favourite for many big fans of the group, helping to set the mood for their quick set. Grouplove's show was full of energy, which was to be expected from the band. They all moved around the stage, including the drummer, Ryan Rabin, who came to front of the stage to say hello and also play a large bass drum in front of his drum kit, during Slow. The band performed all their songs off their freshman album which featured vocals from all of the members of the band (except for Ryan,) so Christian Zucconi, the lead singer figure and rhythm guitarist, was not the only member contributing lead vocals during the concert. During Spun, Andrew Wessen also played a small twelve-string guitar while he sang, donating to the artsy, eccentric and hippy vibe the band projects to their audience. The last two songs of their set were those most anticipated by the audience, Tongue Tied - which was used in the iPod Touch commercial, and their other most popular song, Colours. For both songs the majority of the audience sang along, enjoying the fun music.
After the show the band was around the merch booth and I was able to talk to both Hannah Hooper, the (only) female vocalist of the band, and Christian. Both were very nice, especially Hannah, and were surprised that I had come all the way from Toronto.
They put on a good, energetic show and I hope to see them again. They are definitely a show that would be even better as their own set. Either catch them with Young the Giant till the end of the month, or on their headlining North American tour in April, May and June.
